Changes | Bragg Creek family photographer

Why is it that when our children are young we capture their every minute. We want to record everything they do. Every cute expression, all the new things they learn, all of their firsts, their friends, their toys. I have albums full of our boys when they were young but something happens as they grow up. For me it was when they were about 8 or 9, the number of pictures I took slowed way down. Don’t get me wrong, I still take photos of them but not near as many as I used to and they’re usually while they’re doing sports or playing an instrument. I rarely pick up my camera around the house anymore or capture them when they’re with their friends. Maybe it’s because they’re not as cute any more. Maybe they don’t want to have a camera in their face 24/7 like they used to… they’re more insecure and more aware. But they’re still growing and changing and I have to remind myself to take pictures because I know in years to come, I’ll want to remember these days just as much as the younger years.

A month or so ago Gillian wrote me and said she wanted a session before her son went off to University. A relaxed session with her family before one of the biggest milestones in her son’s life. Why is it we often overlook this age? It’s so important to keep documenting your family as it grows and changes. Maybe it takes a bit more planning with busy schedules and a bit more effort on everyones part, but it’s so worth it.

Chasing the sun | Calgary family photographer

I’m still in awe every day of how beautiful it is out here. There are so many gorgeous places within less than an hours drive. This past weekend we headed out towards the foothills and stopped at a couple of spots you’d easily miss on a typical drive. Climbed some small snowbanks, trudged through the snow and chased the sun until it disappeared… not an easy task for a pregnant mom and young kids but they were troupers. Here’s a peek at their session…

*and I’m lucky enough to see this family two more times as part of my baby love package. Three sessions, digital files and a gorgeous hardcover book. Contact me for more information if you’re expecting… it’s a pretty sweet deal!

They make me smile... | Calgary family photographer

Meet Oliver…

and Hugh…

and their awesome parents (who I’m proud to call friends). Virginia is a local (brilliant) photographer – check her out here if you aren’t familiar her work. I first ‘officially’ met Virginia at a photography workshop in Toronto and now she lives just minutes away. She made our transition to Calgary much easier fielding my MANY emails with questions about schools, neighbourhoods, doctors, summer camps… you name it.

Another sunny, gorgeous fall evening (and I’m still hoping for many more).
