I love the fact that I’ve now been in Calgary long enough to have repeat clients (this was my third in one week!) so fun getting to watch these kids grow!
When the mom of this family wrote and explained they’re making some changes to their home so they wanted a session to help them remember what it was like, I got excited. To me there’s nothing better than a real, honest, at home session. She told me there was a huge tree in the backyard, “the kind of tree tree houses are built in, and kids love to play in” and that tree would sadly soon have to be removed so we had to capture it.
They didn’t tidy before I came (in fact the session was kind of an impromptu thing that was scheduled only hours before I arrived), they left things how they were and asked me to capture just that. That’s not easy to do – in a world of pinterest perfection, it’s hard for people to let things go and show it as it is (even though you know that 90% of the population is the same – we don’t live perfect lives in perfectly kept homes but for some reason many of us struggle accepting that). I know myself even shooting around our own home that it’s always tempting to change things or to fix the boys’ hair before I take a shot but time and time again, it’s those real photos, the ones with the messy room and the unbrushed hair that I cling to because that’s real life for me and that’s what I treasure.
And it’s funny, I say all of this but when I think back to the shoot or look over the images from this session, I see nothing but perfection. I see love and happy children, a beautiful home and a pretty perfect life. So just maybe all the little things we often worry about and fear people will judge us on aren’t really such a big a deal. And maybe that’s part of my job… to show you how I see your family, how the rest of the world sees you… to capture the beauty in your everyday.
I’m posting more than usual here because I feel with these kind of sessions, I’m telling a story and to tell that story, sometimes more is better.
If you’d like one of these sessions before the snow starts to fall, or even an outdoor session, contact me soon – the fall is pretty much booked but I do have a few spaces left : )
